Yesterday I ran the largest 10 miler in the country, Philly’s Broad Street Run. This is the run that started my running interest 2 years ago. Before that, the furthest I’d run was a 5K. But I always like new challenges and enjoyed it so much the first time, I’ve decided it will probably become a yearly race for me. This year after completing my first 2 half marathons last fall, I consider it more of a fun run. Not something I was super time motivated for or trained very hard for… which was fine ( I was pretty busy wedding planning and getting married last month so I didn’t have  ton of free time for running, haha). I slightly edged out my last two years’ time and finished at 1:26:23. You could call it a “PR” but I don’t really follow that… for me running is fun, not a self-competition. I don’t ever time myself for any regular or training runs I take or really push myself that hard. I say ok, I’m going to run 8 miles today, I know the distance but don’t pay attention to the time. I’m not sure if this is a good or bad thing… I enjoy running and I’m not sure if I would enjoy it more or less if I made it more of a personal challenge. I don’t set goal times I just assume I’m going to run around 8.5 minute miles if it’s long distance. Should I be setting more goal times, timing myself during runs, pushing myself harder?? Or should I just enjoy running for the fitness and relaxation it brings me??? I feel like it takes the fun away if it’s some big competition (even if the competition is with myself), but am I wrong??

What are your thoughts? Push harder and work to improve? Or just run and enjoy it??
