This will be my 5th year running the Broad Street Run! I have run every year I lived in Philly except last year when I was in Vermont running with the Cabot Fit Team. This year I’m excited to get back to my favorite race of the year. Today I’m Thinking Out Loud about my goals and previous years…
The Broad Street Run is easily the most scenic and exciting Philly race- 10 miles down Broad Street through many different parts of the city with about 40,000 people. It’s something I look forward to every year and I’d say most of the Philly running community feels the same way about this iconic race.
The funny thing about Broad Street is the first 3 years I ran it my time barely changed at all which made me realize I wasn’t pushing myself at all as a runner. Half marathons are always hard to compare but the Broad Street Run is always a consistent course (obviously other factors such as weather and training come into play as well) but I was totally phoning it in. I typically say that races don’t have to be a competition with anyone, including yourself! I run because I enjoy running, it relaxes me, it makes me feel good physically, mentally, emotionally. If running doesn’t make you feel good- find another type of movement that does! As much as I do just enjoy running it’s definitely motivating and inspiring to see improvements in your races.
For my 2017 Broad Street Run goals I’m hoping for another PR- after a half marathon PR this spring it would be very confidence boosting to PR again. If I’m being totally honest I would love to have a time of 1:20…. I haven’t really been following any training plans- just trying to run 8-9 miles the past few weekends with a couple of short runs during the week. I felt great about this goal until this past week…. I had a small tendonitis flare up (likely from wearing unsupportive shoes out Saturday night and walking in them more than I had planned). I think that’s resolved but I have been afraid to run at all this week so I might feel a bit sluggish those first couple miles. There’s another issue- I’m having some weird jaw/mouth pain by my left lymph node (it’s very painful and preventing me from eating and drinking as much as I’d like so that is slightly problematic). It hurts without even moving so I imagine running might be a bit jarring. I’m planning on having it looked at by a doctor but also hoping it’s just an ulcer or something that will go away on its own. So fingers crossed and send me your PR vibes! Good luck if you are running as well or racing at all this weekend 🙂
