Full Disclosure: I was sent a sample of Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts to review; I am not being compensated for my time.

First of all, just to stop any misconceptions, hemp is part of the Cannibus family but it is NOT the same as marijuana and is safe for kids, adults, everyone. Not only is it safe, but it is a nutritional powerhouse. Hemp hearts are really raw shelled hemp seeds that are a wonderful staple of plant based protein. They are raw, vegan, gluten free, and Non-GMO!

Hemp hearts boast 10g of protein and 10g of omegas. That is double the protein and more omega 3s than chia and flax seeds, and remains lower in carbs. They have a nutty flavor and are great added to many different dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between.

Breakfast- smoothies, oatmeal, homemade protein bars, yogurt, homemade granola

Lunch/Dinner- Salads, Veggies, ground meats, vegetarian burgers, rice, sauces

Snacks- baked goods such as cookies and brownies, hummus, dressings, guacamole

I use them in all of the above but wanted to create a new recipe to use them, enter vegan black bean burgers! Complete protein, egg free, dairy free, meat free J

Vegan Black Bean Burgers

Ingredients:

1 TBSP olive oil

1 yellow onion

3 cloves garlic

1 tsp cumin

2 tsp parsley

Salt and pepper to taste

10 oz mushrooms

1 tsp balsamic vinegar

1 15oz can beans

3 TBSP hemp hearts

1 cup whole wheat bread crumbs

1 TBSP oil

Notes: I used baby bella mushrooms and black beans

Directions:

1.       Heat 1 TBSP oil in pan

2.       Dice onions and garlic, add to pan

3.       Add cumin and parsley to onions and garlic, cook for a few minutes until onions start to break down and become translucent

4.       Finely chop mushrooms and add to onion mixture

5.       Add balsamic vinegar to mushrooms, cook for 5 minutes

6.       Allow onion and mushroom mixture to cool

7.       Mash 1 can of beans, add to veggie mixture

8.       Add hemp hearts and breadcrumbs

9.       Mash all ingredients together and form patties by hand

10.   Refrigerate for 1 hour for best results in keeping patties from crumbling while cooking

11.   Cook each patty 3-5 minutes on each side in heated pan with 1 TBSP oil
