Less than a week until Christmas and less than two weeks until a New Year is upon us! Every year seems to pass faster and faster… since I hate the concept of making New Years Resolutions I wanted to talk a little about setting goals instead….
Most Resolutioners start off the year super motivated about all the changes they are going to make and usually a bulk of that change happens in the first month and then falls to the wayside, hence why New Years Resolutions don’t work. Instead write down SMART (Specific, Measurable, Action-based, Realistic, Time-based) goals in a journal or notebook- or posting them online can help keep you on the path to success. For example, don’t just say you want to exercise more in the new year, instead say I will do three 30 minute cardio equipment (elliptical, treadmill, bike) each week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:00am. Putting it on your schedule like an appointment or “must do” every week can help you make sure it is accomplished. Setting SMART achievable goals is the best road to wellness in the new year.
When making a behavioral change goal such as this I think it’s best to set it for a 3 month period and then after 3 months check in with your goal… are you accomplishing it? falling short? wanting to add to it?? To be successful in goal setting it’s important to think about where you are now and where you want to be at the end of the year and make that change gradually- you aren’t going to go from couch to marathoner overnight… setting small achievable goals along the way such as a 5k, 10k, half marathon, etc. can help build up to your ultimate goal i.e. setting those 3 month goals and checking in.
This year I want to help my friends, family, and readers abandon setting unobtainable resolutions and instead build healthier behaviors. In my 8 Weeks to Wellness with Dietitian Jess we have a new focus every week while continuing to build gradual healthy habits. This program is 100% free and virtual based. I’m available for questions and inspiration. Sign up for the challenge by registering for my newsletter below!
