How to Stop Supporting Diet Culture

As we are getting deep into the holiday season more people will start worrying about “holiday weight” and starting their New Years resolution diets. I don’t want you to do either of these things because neither promotes a healthy relationship with food. The media talks about a new diet every day and since it’s thrown in our faces so much to stay a certain size many people will succumb to it. I wanted to share some diet related vernacular that we really need to avoid using especially this time of year. If you’re striving to practice intuitive eating or trying to get away from restrictive eating or dieting these tips are for you!

STOP

-Talking about the latest diet fad or what foods should be cut out of your diet

Why are you following this diet or cutting out food groups?? Is it medically necessary?? Or are you trying to manipulate your body to be a certain size?? Aren’t there more important things in life to be concerned about besides how you look or your jean size??

STOP

-Genderfying food

Don’t say it’s a girly meal or that you ate like a man- you ate according to what your body was craving and your hunger cues

STOP

-Telling someone about how “unhealthy” or “healthy” a food they chose to eat is

Just because your friend ordered a salad or a burger does not mean they want to hear your thoughts about it. We all have different cravings and different needs at different times. You do you.

STOP

-Counting Calories

IIFYM fits in here too… obviously I will always think quality or quantity but tracking food only perpetuates dieting.

STOP

-Feeling guilt over food

So what if you ate 3 cookies at lunch today?? Were they delicious? Did you enjoy them?? Did they bring you happiness??

STOP

-Saying the words “I look fat”

Does this really serve you or anyone around you?? What does looking fat even mean? Does it mean you’re enjoying your life to the fullest? Who cares if you’ve put on a few lbs- it does not define who you are as a person.

These phrases are just the tip of the iceberg. I’d love hear any anti-diet words you feel we need to cut out as a society- share those with me in the comments!!!
