This weekend I will be running my 6th half marathon…. but it is the first time in two years I’ll be racing! Last year I was signed up to complete this race but a bad case of left foot tendonitis took me out of the running game for a few months. I focused on my cross-training last spring and then competed in triathlons over the summer before making my big comeback to road races by completing my 2nd marathon. This year I’m trying to accomplish a big running PR!
The first half I ever ran was in 2013 and that remains my PR… for several reasons. The first reason is that I trained really well- I was intimidated by the half distance and wanted to make sure I was well-prepared. My half marathons since then have been pretty half-assed training- I’m typically doing something active 5 days a week but I wasn’t focused on my running during 2014 and 2015 (since this was basically when I fell in love with doing triathlons). 2016 started out really rough running wise but I rehabbed my injury and came back to do really well in my marathon.
Honestly I am not thrilled with some of my recent running racing times… my last super solid race was the Broad Street Run 2 years ago (I missed last year when I was in Vermont). I’m hoping to PR at least one race this spring- either Broad Street or a Half so I’m trying my best to focus more on improving my running and relying less on just being in generally good shape to race.
That being said this is a pretty good course- I raced it two years ago and there are only a couple of hills. Crowd support isn’t particularly awesome but I don’t really need it as much during a half (during a marathon is a whole other story though!). My recent runs have been over the place, some really strong, some slower paced. The weather will obviously play a factor too since right now they are calling for rain… and temps near 50 which is a lot warmer then it’s been for my couple training runs. I think it all comes down to having an “on” day or “off” day though. Hopefully I will be on- wish me luck!
